So these guys are an "American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California in 1988", according to Wikipedia. Describing their musical genre has always been difficult because it's so easy to push them into the nu-metal genre. Still, even if metal is their root, their sounds shoot into very diverse musical styles because of their varied influences: alternative metal/rock, experimental rock, post-punk, dream pop, hard rock, psychedelia, funk metal and the list keeps going. Best if we don't try to contain them into one box because they cross genres and push their sonic and stylistic boundaries beyond the limit.

Their sounds are driven by heavy and primal music with Moreno's raw and emotional voice that's sublime crooning (laced with eroticism), and then he switches to chaotic visceral screaming with the rage crammed in it- a Deftones trademark. A primal force is created with the raging burst of guitars and hammering of drums that just ends up consuming every part of your mind and ears.

Their songs sound carnal, like an unleashed sonic overdrive. Primal and hedonistic. Their songs just pierce through the innermost barrier of your heart, and that's what makes Deftones weirdly addictive. It's a feeling you will want to experience over and over again.

And you know what the best part of their music is? It stays like a thorn, or a wedge plunged deep into the jagged edges of your skull that cannot be scrapped off. Okay, that was dark and chaotic. But that is Deftones.

I think Mascara would always be my favourite Deftones song. It has a brooding tone (both Moreno's voice and the music). It's the part after "You're married to me" that really gets me- it's suddenly more dramatic than the other switches. The sudden difference in the guitar pitch just haunts you. It stays and keeps echoing inside.

I think Cherry waves is the more mysterious, mellow, heavy song that takes you away from the world. Of course, there isn't much reference to cherries in it. This one sort of makes you tipsy? I really don't know how to describe that feeling. It's just a very mesmerising song.

Deftones songs have this strange ability to bring up weird emotions. A delightful mix of nostalgia, sadness and yearning. I really don't know what that is. But it is very soothing and euphoric. Sextape and Rosemary are probably two songs that I think can push your mind into the deeper side, but with a touch of bittersweet reminiscence. I think these two would be more psychedelic.

Anyway, that's about Deftones, and you can check out my playlist SPECIFICALLY FOR DEFTONES here (and please ignore the Cigarettes After Sex song title I've given for the playlist). I love them too much.
